95 A Ventriloquist's Story: Her Masters Voice (2012) #733 DOCUMENTARY Main
1 hour. BBC. Internationally acclaimed ventriloquist Nina Conti, takes the bereaved puppets of her mentor and erstwhile lover Ken Campbell on a pilgrimage to Vent Haven, the resting place for puppets of dead ventriloquists. She gets to know her latex and wooden travelling partners along the way, and with them deconstructs herself and her lost love in this ventriloquial docu-mocumentary requiem.

Ken Campbell was a hugely respected maverick of the British theatre, an eccentric genius who would snort out forgotten artforms. Nina was his prodigy in ventriloquism and has been said to have reinvented the artform. This film is truly unique in genre and style. No one has seen ventriloquism like this before.

Nina Conti's funny, highly original and poignant documentary, takes us on two journeys. A personal journey, and a professional one, through the strange, surprising and often hilarious world of ventriloquism. When Nina was just another twenty-something wannabe actress, Ken presented her with a teach-yourself ventriloquism kit. This set her on a path to becoming a sell-out act in Britain and abroad, with a clutch of major awards.

On the road, Nina brings all the puppets to life as struggles to meet the conflicting demands of her old acerbic partner Monkey, and the new characters she has been bequeathed. But one puppet remains silent. Ken's doll of himself sits mournful and judgemental in the hotel bedroom. Nina cannot find her master's voice and until she does, she will not be able to lay her old life to rest.

Never has watching someone talk to themselves been this interesting.

97 Make Me Happy: A Monkey's Search for Happiness (2012) #785 DOCUMENTARY Main
Comedian and ventriloquist Nina Conti (and monkey) delve into the world of new age and alternative therapies in the quest for self-knowledge, enlightenment and happiness.

Nina, mostly happy, gauche and open, is unravelling a little. Life is flying by and she is fearful of what she is becoming - a flakey, stressed-out mum. She wants to feel less angst, more grounded and happy. Monkey is sceptical and the voice of her self-doubt and to him it's all rubbish - the so-called therapists are nothing but charlatans trying to make money.

In a documentary both comical and bizarre, Nina is subjected to therapies ranging from naked yoga and laughter therapy to shamanic ritual, before heading off for an unsettling three-day retreat in the wilds of Scotland to undergo primal screaming and rebirth.

But will it make her happy?
98 The Lark Ascending (2012) #1403 MUSIC Main
BBC 30 mins.
Dame Diana Rigg explores the enduring popularity of The Lark Ascending by the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, which was recently voted Britain's favourite piece of classical music by listeners to Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4.

Composed at a key turning point in world history, The Lark Ascending represents music for all occasions. It is used in rites of passage such as births, deaths and marriages, and is a favourite for film-makers looking to create that quintessential English pastoral feel. Fans of the work include actor Peter Sallis, who wants a copy of The Lark Ascending to be buried with him, top violinist Tasmin Little, who has played the piece as part of the BBC Proms, and music critic Michael Kennedy, who was a personal friend of Vaughan Williams.

The programme includes a beautiful new performance of the work in the same village hall where it was heard for the first time in December 1920. The Lark Ascending is performed by 15-year-old violin prodigy Julia Hwang and pianist Charles Matthews, using the original arrangement for violin and piano.
