25 Horizon: The Hawking Paradox (2005) #815 DOCUMENTARY Main
49 mins. BBC. For thirty years the most famous scientist in the world defended an extraordinary idea, an idea some claimed would undermine the whole of science. It was called the information paradox and it led one opponent to dub Hawking 'the most stubborn man in the universe'. But finally Hawking had to admit that he'd been wrong all along. Now, as he nears the end of his extraordinary career, Hawking's scientific legacy is being called into question like never before.

For a year Horizon filmed behind the scenes with Hawking as he struggled to finish what many thought was going to be his last scientific paper. If he succeeded he would potentially end his career on a high, confirming his status as one of the great figures in physics. But the odds were against him, as his physical health continued to decline.

This is an extraordinary story of one man's defiance of disability and his peers. It is a story that ranges from the beginning of the universe, which Hawking explored, to the intensive care unit of Addenbrookes, where he was taken and was critically ill for three months. On his hospital bed he had an insight which he hoped would form the basis of his latest comeback.

31 Pinchas Zuckerman & Itzhak Perlman: Grand Duo (I) (1977) #615 DOCUMENTARY-MUSIC Main
47 mins. Directed by Christopher Nupen for Allegro Films.

Itzhak Perlman on stage at the Royal College of Music, London, and Pinchas Zukerman. Two of the world's leading violinists appearing together for the first time. Even though they are very different as artists, in style and in temperament, they greatly enjoy each other's play, and each other's company. They have developed a remarkable relationship.

In spite of their differences, they are often mistaken for one another. They were both born in Israel. They both attended the Julliard School courses. And they both won the Leventritt Award (America's top musical prize).

They have come to London at the end of an European tour together, a tour that has produced immense enthusiasm wherever they have been. Not since Yehudi Menuhin and Isaac Stern played together in Edinburgh in 1953 have two violinists of this calibre seriously set out to harness their individual talents to the disciplines and the pleasures of playing together.

This concert, a last minute addition to this tour, was given in front of an audience of students and musicians, and was filmed for television.
